The characters of Messerschmann and Romainville symbolize Europe's technological advancement and industry as opposed to the now-outdated establishments and business model symbolized by Madame Desmortes and her old money. In this regard, there is symbolism in Madame Desmortes' name, since "morte" is the French word for died.
