Religion versus superstition is a theme in the book. Armor-Of-God is an extremely religious and pious man. He tries to live his life in accordance with his beliefs, and for the most part, he succeeds. He runs the general store in Vigor Church and is a generous and understanding man, extending credit when needed, and trusting his neighbors. This includes the Red population in the area. He is eager to lead by example, treating natives exactly the same as he would anyone else. In this manner, he is every bit an upstanding and respectable member of his community. He often invites those less fortunate to share a meal, or offers his home as a place to sleep, even extending this offer to complete strangers, regardless of their nationality.
