Malcolm MacGregor is only ten when Brigham first arrives, but he is fascinated with horses and excited to have a new friend. Malcolm would like to go with the men to fight, but his father asks him to remain home to protect the family. Malcolm keeps his eyes and ears open and manages to keep up with the gossip on the manor. He is the first to know that Parkins and Mrs. Drummond are courting, and the first to know that Maggie is pregnant. When Ian MacGregor dies, he leaves Malcolm his sword. Eventually, Malcolm is involved in fighting British soldiers while trying to protect his family who have fled to the hills. In the end, he leaves with Serena and Brigham for the New World.
