Raymond's grasp on reality is thin. We know this because of his delusions when he accompanies Squeaky on her practice runs. One example is when he thinks he is driving a wagon with some horses. Another time he pretends that he's a tightrope walker on the curb. He is developmentally and socially delayed. Raymond views everyone with a very naive and innocent way, which is why people are mean to him and take advantage. Squeaky knows this and so goes to great lengths to protect him. The example for this is when the girls ask why Raymond's head is so large.
