Davidson dreams of the gently rolling mountains of Nebraska which, Dr. Macphail recalls, are strangely reminiscent of women's breasts. This type of foreshadowing allows a careful reader to realize that Davidson's profession of love for Thompson are not far from the mark, and Davidson's 'love' is not particularly Christ-like love.
