The Widow Cooper owns the house in which the twins rent a room. When they arrive, the two men turn out to be foreigners with titles. Fascinated, the townspeople flock to visit the twins as soon as they arrive. The fascination, however, soon ends and the Widow Cooper becomes their only friend.

Rowena is Widow Cooper's daughter. She is described as young, beautiful, shy, and destined to become an old maid. Tom Driscoll, however, has a crush on Rowena, but when he learns that he was born Chambers, he decides he can no longer court her.
