Valet de Chambre (Chambers) is Roxana's son. Roxana worries about Chamber's fate as a slave and decides to switch him with Tom Driscoll, so that he will not be sold down river. Thomas, Percy Driscoll's son, grows up as Chambers, the son of Roxy the slave. Chambers never learns to read or write, but he is known to be kind, generous, and the kind of person who will grow up to be a fine man. Chambers, however, believes himself to be a slave, and thus, he behaves like a slave. When the truth comes out about his parentage, he is returned to his rightful place, but he does not fit in. He is uneducated and unhappy in his new life despite the freedom and money it has given him.
