Sasson writes the book in the first person point of view, giving the reader a first person narrative of life as a woman in Saudi Arabia. The author, however, is not Sultana, the narrator of the book. Sultana is a Saudi woman who is not allowed to write a book on her own. Instead, Sultana has told her story to a writer and asked her to tell the story as honestly as possible. To do this, the author chose to adopt the first person point of view and tell the story through Sultana's voice as it was told to her.
