Why do you think Austen chooses to include the letter from Mr Collins in Chapter 48?

Austen chooses to use the letter from Mr. Collins, in regard to Lydia's predicament, as a way of heightening the susupense, and to show that Elizabeth's worries about the reputation of the family are very real. It is also to show characterization of Mr. Collins as the petty individual (and very hypocritical) that he is.
