It is said that Jane Austen embodied Maxism before Marx. An example of this would be her attitude toward money, and the way in which money shaped people's lives. Austen rebelled against the materialism and focus on financially attractive marital arrangements. She did not, however, follow through on turning her back on the idea. In the novel, Pride and Prejudice, Austen strives to poke fun at Mrs. Bennet's desire to marry her girls off in a way that is financially advantageous to the family, but ultimately, both Jane and Elizabeth make "wealthy" marriages and Lydia's not so wealthy husband is bought off.
