When the Bennet's receive news of Lydia's upcoming marriage they have different reactions. Mr. Bennet is happy for Lydia. One can almost believe that he's envious of Lydia's decision to marry for love rather than convention (something it seems he may have regreted throughout his lifetime). Mrs. Bennet is upset beyond belief. She can't believe that Lydia would scandalize the family as she has, that Wickham can't possibly bring money into the home. She imagines the worst, whereas her husband imagines the best.
