Victoria Roubideaux was abandoned by her father, and her mother is described as a troubled and mean spirited person. As a result, Victoria is a shy, young woman, who keeps to herself and doesn't have any real friends. She has had one boyfriend, but he disappeared without a word, leaving Victoria behind..... pregnant and alone.

Alone and desperate, Victoria seeks help from one of the only kind people she knows, a teacher. Maggie Jones steps in and saves Victoria at a time when she needs help the most. Victoria is uneducated about pregnancy, and Maggie arranges for medical treatment. She also helps Victoria find the only true home she has ever known.
