Individualism is a motif that is seen throughout this story. Amish society demands conformity. In the Amish world, everyone dresses the same. Everyone works hard, going to school only through the eighth grade, devoting their days to working their farms and community. Any deviation from this is seen as a threat to God and community. It is no wonder that Katie Fisher's forbidden pregnancy caused such strong reactions.
