Who is Piotr Carver from Plain Kate and what is their importance?

Piotr Carver is Plain Kate's father. He is a good man, who teaches his daughter to be a great carver. When the witch's fever comes, however, Piotr dies, leaving his daughter unapprenticed in the carving art and unable to afford to have herself apprenticed. As a result, she becomes homeless and desperate.
