In the novel, The Pines, Ethan (the main character) comes to and is told that he has suffered for the last couple of weeks from amnesia. He accepts this at first, but then, once he starts asking various people questions, notices that things don't add up. First, there was no contact by the sheriff to his wife, even though the sheriff has said that he did. And, he hasn't been 'out' for 2 weeks. He learns that 15 months, at least, have passed. As a secret service agent, he begins to investigate fully.
