Steve is an immoral individual whom Slim calls a "pin-striped snake," Steve comes into their lives and ruins it during the 3.5 years he and Mama are together. Through her association with Steve, Mama leaves the good husband and father-figure of Henry Upshaw and cons Slim's biological father. Steve eventually sends Mama to the hospital by physically abusing her.
