Tiradentes was a Brazilian revolutionary who led a revolt against Portugal. The Portuguese government called him a conspirator and a bandit, and he was hanged and quartered. Later, Tiradentes became known as a hero, working for Brazilian liberation. Freire uses Tiradentes as an example of how oppressors try to couch the oppressed as miscreants to turn the people against each other.
