What is the meaning of the flower in Paul's Case?

The flowers show up throughout the novel, but they all represent beauty that can be found in the ordinary and mundane. When the flowers wilt, are buried in the snow, placed in a case....it is all symbolic of an attack on beauty, and in many cases on Paul's inner self.
