Artaxerxes is the only Persian leader profiled by Plutarch in this volume. He was the second Persian king by that name, and he was the son of Darius. who was defeated by Alexander. Artaxerxes fended off the Spartans when he allied with the Greeks, but later allied with the Spartans. He also fought against the Egyptians.
