The novel is written in everyday English, which the characters speak clearly and plainly. The reader is not overwhelmed with technical jargon, military jargon or the salty language of the sea. This is why the characters come across as real people and have credibility with the reader. Even when Boland and Pitt are talking about the technical equipment on the Martha Ann, the language is clear and concise.
