Imperialism is a recurring idea. European expansion delivered a near fatal blow to many cultures around the world. In the name of "civilization," Europeans felt they had free reign to destroy cultures that had existed long before the Roman Empire. One cannot say that their motives were purely financial. On the contrary, many good people honestly believed that the people outside of their culture needed to be saved from themselves.
