Who is Dr. Edwin Ransom from Out of the Silent Planet and what is their importance?

Ransom is the protagonist of the story. He is an academic in his late 30’s. He is an insatiable curiosity for new ideas and culture. Ransom is a professor of philology, the study of languages. These traits set him up perfectly for his forced interplanetary travel. Although a sympathetic character, Lewis left Ransom reliable enough to allow the reader to experience the new world largely through Ransom.
