What is the theme in Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse?

There is of course the dust but I'm going to mention music as being a big theme here. Music is central to Billie Jo and her story. Playing the piano is Billy Jo's passion and her refuge. Later it becomes Billy Jo's chance of escaping the dust and poverty. Billy Jo is able to define herself and her pain, like the death of her mother, through music.
