Wilder's use of imagery leans toward the poetic but is balanced and subtle. One example of imagery can be found in Mrs. Webb's description of Emily's ribbon;

If it were a snake it would bite you.

From this imagery we can infer that Emily has placed the ribbon too close to her face.
