In Part I, Chapter II, the author combines cold, dismal weather and nightfall to set the tone for Jamie's uncomfortable return to Ayrshire. He uses the elements to help the reader picture how Jamie feels about leaving the calmness of his new life to come back to the emotions and memories of his past. Weather is used frequently throughout the story to back up emotions with visual imagery
