Hierarchy is another theme in the book.Throughout the novel, Jimmy compares his status to that of people around him. Every time his father gets a new job, Jimmy notes how large his family's new home is in comparison with the homes of other compound employees. In school, he finds himself low on the social scale and tries to increase his status by becoming the class clown. At his high school graduation, Jimmy becomes keenly aware of his low desirability to colleges. Being a "word person" automatically places Jimmy lower on the hierarchy than Crake, who excels at math and science.
