Why did Vivian choose to give up her daughter Maisie for adoption?

Coming on the heels of her husband Dutchy's tragic death in the Central Pacific, Vivian was emotionally wounded and vowed never to love someone as much as she loved Dutchy, so that she would not be hurt when that person died. Thus, she considered herself unable to love her daughter, leading to her choice to give it up for adoption.
