McMurphy is a petty criminal who was serving a six months sentence at a work farm when he pretended to be insane so that he could serve his time at the more comfortable mental hospital. McMurphy claims to be a professional gambler and makes an immediate bet with the other patients that he can get the better of Miss Ratched in less than a week because he can see how controlling she is. McMurphy does rattle Miss Ratched and win his bet before the week is over, even though his win seems precarious for a while.
