Chief is a patient on a mental ward. Chief had a difficult childhood in which he first felt invisible in front of white visitors to his home and later when his father became an alcoholic, falling into his own depression. Chief continues to feel invisible, therefore he does not speak. This leads the administrators at the hospital to believes him deaf and mute even though he is not, an example of their lack of care with their patients. Chief believes there is machinery in the wall as part of his mental illness. This delusion begins to fade as Chief stops some of his meds and his mental fog clears.
