Love and the abhorrence of war are recurring ideas in the book. Many of their early landings were based on their views of love and war. The encounter with Attila the Hun revealed that his actions were based on fear not love. They were in Moscow when the defense sirens sounded and saw the results. Their landing in Shanghai gave them the chance to see a world without war and how it functioned. Mashara, a super computer, was the solution to a world destroyed by the actions of man.
