How does the author use foreshadowing in On the Beach?

The epigraph, which is in the beginning of the novel, quotes Elliot's, The Hollow Men.

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

This foreshadows the death and destruction resulting from the radiation posioning, which is quickly approaching Australia.
