Napoleon Bonaparte was the military and political leader of France in the early 19th century. He took power following the political instability that was brought on the by French Revolution. By 1804, Napoleon was Emperor of the French Empire. Through the use of the modern draft and a combination of modern military tactics, Napoleon used an army of hundreds of thousands to wage a war unlike any Europe had ever seen. While Napoleon was a dictator, he was admired for his Napoleonic Code, as well as his military strategies.
