Why does Olive's journal entry haunt Martha throughout the novel?

Olive's journal entry reveals that she hoped to be a writer, that she wanted to visit the ocean, and that above all else, she hoped that she and Martha would become friends. Olive writes that Martha is the "nicest girl" in the entire class, a fact that catches Martha by surprise. This haunts Martha because she didn't meet the expectations of the girl Olive wrote about.
