Who is Carol from Oleanna and what is their importance?

Carol is one of the play's two main characters. She is "A woman of twenty", a student at a well-respected university, and one of John's students. At the opening of the play, Carol is struggling with John's class and has come to John's office for guidance on how she can best raise her grade and avoid failing the class.
