Louisa Carey from Of Human Bondage is Philip's aunt that he comes to live with. Though both Philip's aunt and uncle are both cold individuals, he finds that his aunt at least tries to get along. She is the one that shows him the books and encourages him to read. She has not been able to have children of her own and desperately wants to forge a bond between herself and Philip, but is just not sure how to do so. Later, when William refuses to help out Philip, she cashes in a savings bond that she has so that Philip doesn't end up having to pawn off some of the few belongings he had of his father and mother.
