How does the author use foreshadowing in Odd Thomas?

In Chapter 37, Odd mentions how Porter, Ozzie, and Terri are like substitute parents to him. Why Odd would need substitute parents is a mystery, but this suggestion foreshadows that Odd will introduce his real parents at a later point, and that they won't be the kind of people Odd wants to talk about.
