Who is Lew from Nine Stories and what is their importance?

Lew is Eloise's husband. He works in New York City and takes the train to and from home in Connecticut. He once told Eloise that he loved the works of Jane Austen, but she later found out that he had never read any of them. Lew never physically appears in the story.
