Describe symbolism in Night Shift by Stephen King

In the story, Gray Matter, Henry and his friends find Richie Grenadine turned into something otherworldly, something disgusting. Richie is a mass of gray jelly. This seems to be symbolic for the mess alcoholism can make of a person's life.
