"One day when we came back from work, we saw three gallows rearing up in the assembly place, three black crows." This simile likens the gallows (a place where you hang people) as three crows. Crows are often associated with evil and doom.  "We wished the feast were over, so that we should not have to play this comedy anymore." (pg. 8). This metaphor is comparing their celebration to a farse or a hypocritical joke since there is little to celebrate.
