In night chapter 9 the book ends with haunting sense of hollowness. Why do you think the author ends with this tone?

The author's purpose (or one of his purposes) in writing this book is to show the grim reality of life in a concentration camp. Leaving the reader with a sense of hollowness reinforces how the people in the camp felt empty, alone, inhuman.
