Roger Gould was a psychologist. He coined the term childhood consciousness to describe the stubborn illusion that humanity can live in absolute safety. He believed that the illusion made more sense in childhood, but that by the end of high school, it was no longer true and should be repudiated. If not, it will "exert great power over our adult lives." Gould died in 1998.
