Change is a recurring idea in the book. Change is probably the only thing that we can rely on in our lives; we can be sure that not only will our circumstances change, but our bodies, our outlooks and our lives, in general, will change, as well. Life is a series of changes and, in Viorst's view, a series of losses. Even when we rigidly hold on to what we think we believe and who we think we are, this too will change, if only through old age and death.
