What metaphors are used in Native Son by Richard Wright?

In Part I, following Bigger everywhere - even witnessing the crime and the scene in the furnace room - is a large white cat whose green eyes stare accusingly. The omnipresence of the cat, clearly a metaphor for the greater society, tells us that even when he is by himself, Bigger is not truly free.
