Jane Johnston is considered the the first Native American literary writer. A mixture of Ojibwa and Irish-American lineage, Jane married a man named Henry Schoolcraft, who was an important early anthropologist. The couple went onto to compile information on local Native American folklore, which in turn, laid the groundwork for Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha and for modern Native American studies.
