Etana was the twelfth king of Kish. When he determines that he is unable to sire an heir, Etana requests the assistance of Shamash, after which, Shamash leads Etana to a pit where an eagle lies broken, telling him if he assists the eagle, he will fly him to find the birth plant. Etana assists in healing the eagle, and after several tries, he flies with the eagle to heaven to speak with the gods. Soon afterward, he has a son, Balih.
