Oliver metaphorically links the metronome, and its use for beating out time, with death suggests the poet's awareness even as a young student of the eternal ticking of time. For the poet it was symbolic of the incessant repetition of the music lessons as she sat in the airless room. For the poet the music lessons and her teacher's life represented a form of death.
