The division between African Americans and whites in the play is due to more than just skin color; the language also separates them. This is apparent from the first exchange of dialogue in the play. Norwood asks Cora, "I want to know if that child of yours means to leave here this afternoon?" This clear form of English differs heavily from the accented form of English used by most African American characters in the play.
