The maid and the cook are servants in the Government Man's home. They provide Ramotswe with the crucial information she needs to garner insight into the family's
situation. The Maid tells her what she sees and understands in terms of the
family's relationships and attitudes. The Cook's confession of his unhappiness, and
of what that unhappiness drove him to do, leads Ramotswe to the truth.
