Prejudice is an underlying theme throughout the novel. The immigrants experience prejudice in many ways, they are separated by race, work, and religion. One example of this would be Sadie's son, the child she was forced to leave behind, and the child who later adoped by Mr. Gillen. When Sadie finally located her son after her return to America, she stayed away and watched him from afar, afraid that the prejudice she had encounted would then touch him.
