The Hayden family represents different things to different people. Most whites in town respects the Hayden family. David's father, Wesley, is serving his second term as sheriff of Mercer County while Frank Hayden is a physician in Mercer County. Whites see them as a well educated and successful family. Natives in the area know Frank Hayden as a molester of young Indian Women and see Wesley as protector of his brother.
